"Safety Alerts for Caregivers of Young Children"
Problem Statement
Preschool age children are the most vulnerable age group for devastating burn injuries. At this age, children's abilities to reach, grab, move and explore are changing daily with remarkable speed. Burn injuries often occur because of the child's natural curiosity and exploration of their environment or as a result of an inadvertent action by parent or caregiver. Young children are also at great risk of dying or being seriously injured in a house fire because they must rely on parents or caregivers acting quickly and appropriately to evacuate them from a burning house.
Preschool and daycare center administrators and staff members are ideally positioned to help prevent fire and burn injuries to young children, by partnering with Burn Prevention Foundation in both sharing information with adult caregivers and by teaching children directly.
Objective
Utilizing and partnering with a network of daycare providers and preschool centers, Burn Prevention Foundation provides topical fire and burn safety information and prevention strategies for preschool age children. Information is passed through this network directly to the parents and caregivers. Educators are also better-equipped to teach and reinforce safe behaviors during their time with children. Description Safety fact sheets focusing on the unique hazards and risks that confront preschool age children are provided to the caregivers of children served by daycare centers that enroll as participants in the BPF Safety Line Network.
Target Participants
Method of Distribution
Safety fact sheet topics are researched and developed by Burn Prevention Foundation staff. Master-quality fact sheets are mailed to the member daycare centers and preschools of the Safety Lines Network who, in return, reproduce the materials and distribute them to the families and caregivers of children enrolled in their centers.
