People with mobility impairments or challenges are generally at greater risk of fire and burn injuries than general population. This program is designed to provide individuals with techniques and behaviors that address their specialized needs, primarily modifying some of the prevention strategies that general population would utilize.
This program is designed to be administered by staff of rehabilitation and other residential care environments, or by caregivers, family or through self-instruction. The program kit includes a 20-minute instructional video; reproducible masters for supplemental brochure; self-test; and discussion leader's guide. Program content includes escape-planning and - for instances when escape is not feasible - sheltering, in both home and workplace environments. Particular emphasis is placed on hazards associated with smoking, cooking from a wheelchair, and the prevention of tap water scalds. Protective initiatives stressed include the value of preplanned fire escape routes or sheltering options, modification of clothing for safer cooking, alternate cooking and food-serving methods, safe smoking practices, and the proper first aid procedures for burns.
Target Participants
The program is well-suited for persons with mild to moderate mobility impairments and their caregivers (whether family members or other household members or professional staff of residential care settings).
Program Presentation Length
The program is 45 to 60 minutes' duration.
Manner of Distribution Presentation
The program is effective both when presented in a group setting by fire safety educators, employee safety trainers and agency professionals, or as a self-study by persons with mobility impairments and/or their caregivers.
