Methodology:
This program is teacher-directed. Burn Prevention Foundation provides an age-appropriate lesson plan with extended activities to provide individualized instruction, integrating major subject areas. The program includes a video/DVD featuring Brian Dawkins, Philadelphia Eagles All-Pro Safety, teaching students fire and burn prevention tips, and the skills to extinguish a clothing fire. Along with a large classroom poster, a bookmark is provided for each student that reinforces the concepts taught in the lesson.
Program Length:
30 to 45 minutes. Many extended activities are suggested that can enable teachers to develop a unit of learning that can be taught over several days. A pre and post test is included for outcomes measurement. Students are expected to be able to demonstrate the life-saving skills of stop, drop and roll. They should understand proper first aid for burns, and they should be able to demonstrate calling 911 by providing necessary information to the 911 operator.
