Safe Escape Program

Objective

To instruct and encourage children and families to plan and practice safe and proper escape from their home in a fire situation.

Description

The "Safe Escape" program is an excellent home enrichment activity to involve parents with their children, in taking the prevention lessons learned a step further into action. Using the grid form on the provided sheet, families draw a floor plan of their home, indicating two escape routes out of every room, choosing an outside meeting place, and practicing the escape plan throughout the year. When participants send a copy of their completed plans to Burn Prevention Foundation, they are eligible for family savings coupons from participating restaurants, retail
establishments, and entertainment venues.

Participant mailing data is captured and provides a customer base to which BPF communicates twice-annually, providing seasonal burn and fire prevention tips, along with reminders to practice their escape plans regularly.

Target Participants

Children and their parents, household members

Timeframe

The time necessary to appropriately devise and practice a plan
can vary, depending upon the number of individuals involved, and the size of the home. An average time of initially laying out and discussing the plan would be thirty minutes to one hour, with an additional drill of practice, aiming for a time of under four minutes
.

Method of Distribution

Plans are distributed in classrooms, in conjunction with other BPF curriculum, such as "Learn About Burns" or "Stop, Drop, Roll, Cool & Call" and upon completing the educational tour of the "Children's Fire Safety House" programs. The planning grids are also distributed to fire companies, and allied emergency services organizations for use in their fire prevention education, community events, and public awareness efforts.
