NewsEmbassy Bank of Lehigh Valley and Puritan Products, Inc. of Bethlehem, PA recently awarded the Burn Prevention Foundation, a grant through the EITC program to support the Foundation’s Children’s Fire Safety House program in the Lehigh Valley.
The Fire Safety House Program is delivered to nearly 24,000 children annually through a number of 2-story mobile classrooms designed to resemble a typical home that travels to schools and community events teaching children easy-to-follow procedures to avoid fires from starting and the steps to take should they ever find themselves in a real fire situation.
Included in the Safety House design is a living room, kitchen, control room on the first level and a bedroom on the second level. Children go inside the Safety House and are taught by trained professionals the fire and burn hazards associated with each room. While in the bedroom they are taught fire escape skills in a realistic setting using electronically operated smoke detectors and non-toxic smoke that give the effects of an actual fire. Upon leaving the inside of the Safety House a 911-programmed telephone system at a table provides the children the opportunity to practice calling 911. The operator of the Control Room answers the phone in the same manner a dispatcher would in the case of an actual emergency.
This past fall an Allen High School football player credited the Fire Safety House Program training he received as an elementary school student with preparing him to properly react when he saved the lives of nine persons in an Allentown apartment fire. “This program saves lives,” noted B. Daniel Dillard, Executive Director of the Burn Prevention Foundation. “It is a tremendous gift to the community when sponsors such as Embassy Bank allow us to provide this service free of charge to those who need it the most,” Dillard continued.
Kristin Wannisky, Assistant Vice President/Marketing, Embassy Bank stated, ”We are proud to be a supporter of the Fire Safety House Program. Children get to learn in a safe, simulated setting exactly what they need to do should they be caught in a fire. These programs are invaluable to our community and our children.
