About Us

Philosophy

We believe:

  • That burn injury is one of the most catastrophic injuries that the human body can sustain and still survive.
  • That burns are extremely costly to individuals, communities, and employers.
  • That those groups at greatest risk are the very young and the very old and those dependent on caregivers.
  • That the focal point of burn prevention is individual responsibility, education, and behavior modification awareness.
  • That burn incidence and severity can be significantly reduced through concentrated community awareness, the educational system, and a year-round program to educate the public.
  • That public understanding and recognition of the severity of the burn injury problem is unusually low in comparison to other injury and illness issues.
  • That most burns are preventable.

Partnering in Communities

Burn Fire Department RelationshipsBurn Prevention Foundation reaches the maximum number of program participants and beneficiaries through collaboration with a wide network of community partners. BPF works with fire services, first responders and emergency service groups, educators, healthcare provider organizations, community service groups, and others dedicated to spreading awareness of fire and burn safety and prevention issues, programs and services.

In particular, fire service organizations serve a vital role as our allied professionals in the field, providing volunteer instructors for our Children's Fire Safety Houses and other community-based fire safety and burn prevention education programs. Each year, hundreds of firefighters from nearly 200 fire companies (both paid and volunteer departments) get involved in helping to educate children and other target high-risk populations. The Children's Fire Safety Houses travel to schools and to various community events and locations to provide this very hands-on, life-saving instruction. Burn Prevention Foundation regularly offers instructor-training workshops to prepare fire services professionals and other community volunteers for presenting the Foundation's very customized education programs. The Children's Fire Safety Houses are available for use by fire companies, municipalities, child and youth organizations and other community groups - to use for health and safety fairs, community days and other community events. Business and industry have also made the fire safety house education a featured program at employee-family safety days or company picnics.
